Channing Tatum will play the card-slinging, kinetic energy-manipulating mutant Gambit in a future X-Men standalone, a producer on the franchise said at the X-Men: Days of Future Past premiere in London.
"Yes, it's Channing. It is Channing. Yes, yes," producer Lauren Shuler Donner revealed to Total Film during an on-camera red carpet interview Monday at the premiere. Multiple media outlets later reported that Tatum would take on the character in a standalone film; though no date has been set yet, Fox has dated unidentified Marvel films as far ahead as 2018.
“He’s a rogue. Channing, he’s a rascal, just like [Gambit's alter ego] Remy LeBeau,” she added. "And he can handle the action, well all know that, and he’s got a real good heart because I know him personally. ... He'l be great for Gambit. And he's a southerner .... he understands that world, and you know Gambit loves New Orleans.”
Tatum, who previously said he'd like to play Gambit, is no stranger to taking on action-packed roles as he has previously starred in White House Down and G.I. Joe: Retaliation. And he proved in stripper flick Magic Mike that he can swoon his fans in a tight outfit.
Tatum will join a franchise filled with celebrities. Days of Future Past, for example, stars Hugh Jackman, Halle Berry, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, James McAvoy, Anna Paquin, Ellen Page and Peter Dinklage. The film debuts May 23.
